  • The Vineyards of Champagne Were the “Front Line” of Battle and Wars of World War I and World War II
    • During These Wars the Entire Champagne Industry Was Forced to More the Production Operation Into the Wine Cellars
  • World War I AKA= “The Great War”, 1914-1919
    • German Army Invaded Epernay On September 4th. 1914
    • Champagne Was the Frontlines Between the German & Allied Armies
        • During the Trench Warfare 40% of the Vineyards Were Distroyed
    • Harvested Grapes Under Shell Fire.

GERMANY

RHEINGAU & BADEN

  • During WWll, These Regions Were Subject to Reoccurring Aireal Bombardment. The Vineyards Were Not Specifically Targeted but Allied Air Forces Would Once  Completing a Mission Over Germany Would Routinely Jettison Remaining Munitions On Their Way Back to England to Conserve Fuel.
  • August 12th. 1942- Schloss Johannisberg and the Surrounding Vineyards Were  a Secondary Target of an Air Raid On Mainz With a Third of the Vineyards Destroyed.
